On the 21st of January women across the globe organized themselves in a March in solidarity

On the 21st of January women across the globe organized themselves in a March in solidarity with the American women’s rights activists. On this day a march was organized also in Riga. The aim was to condemn the intolerance expressed by the new President of the United States, Donald Trump, as well as to demonstrate the unity and strength of women.
There is a current political trend worldwide that endangers the achievements made in the area of women’s rights.

For example, the Latvian Parliament (Saeima) is currently working on stimulating the demographic growth, even though a recent study by European Institute for Gender Equality showed that poverty affects women disproportionately.

In order to change this situation, state support and equal pay are needed. Latvia still has a lot of work to do in order to change the fact that every third woman and children suffer from violence. Moreover, women have to fight in order to secure their right to control their own bodies.
